About a month ago I stumbled across the opportunity to ride a rickshaw around Asakusa in Tokyo.
A few things about Asakusa from the website Japan-Talk:
"Asakusa was once Tokyo's largest pleasure district filled with gangsters, geisha, courtesans, writers, artists, actors and beggars. The entire area was completely destroyed in WWII. With the revitalization that followed the war the pleasure districts faded into history, or at least they became much smaller. Today, most of the area dates back to the 1950's. This is considered an old neighborhood in Tokyo where everything is regularly reconstructed. For many years, Asakusa retained a stigma of being a rough part of town. In recent years Asakusa has become increasingly trendy. Its old neighborhoods have plenty of atmosphere. Land prices have gone up and its suddenly a fashionable place to live and work." - japan-talk
I actually live really close to Asakusa by bike and I didn't realize it until I purchased my first rickshaw ride. Now I take midnight bike rides to Asakusa when it's practically empty so I can really enjoy the towns atmosphere! Something just really attracts me to the area.
So you can buy a rickshaw ride in Asakusa. I forgot the details but I paid around 3,000 yen to go to one end of the long walkway starting near the Thunder gate. I suggest the rickshaw ride not only because you can avoid all the tourists and crowds in general but also because your driver will give you tons of information about the area. Plus you can take all the pictures and videos you like!! My drivers name was Masao and he was a great tour guide!
Picture time!
